ORC — Master Bedroom Makeover Final Reveal! // Week 6

This has been the LONGEST, busiest, 6 weeks of my life and I cannot believe it’s finally over. I did it!

For the past 38 days I’ve been redoing my master bedroom—taking it from plain and boring, to moody and dramatic. While working on the project, I also started a new job (two technically, but that’s a story for another day), took the 3 cheerleading teams I coach to their first competition, finished 3 client design projects, anddd turned 24 (woop woop!). Like I said, it was quite a month. But let me tell you…it was WORTH IT.

Before I get into the final reveal, here’s everything you need to catch up on my progress over the past couple of weeks. All of the triumphs, the fails, the DIYs, the design story—you can find it all in the links below!

And now, here it is…

my moody master bedroom makeover revealed!

This project has definitely been a testament to just how much you can accomplish if you set your mind to it. I came up with a plan, set goals for myself, and stuck to a hard deadline—all while juggling a million other things on my plate—and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. There were definitely days I felt like giving up on the project, or at least putting it on pause while I worked on other things. But I knew I couldn’t quit with the world watching (aka my 232 Instagram followers haha!). Now, I’ve got an absolutely gorgeous room to show for all my blood, sweat, and tears…because yes, there were tears.

I mean COME. ON. Just look at that room! It’s cute, it’s sophisticated, it’s…pretty hard to get out of bed in the morning, tbh. I just want to stay in this cozy little cave all day. Speaking of caves—I was a little worried in the beginning that using so much black in the room would make it really dark since there is only one window. However, I am definitely pleasantly surprised by just how bright the room is most days. I took all of the pictures you see in this post on a gloomy, rainy day, with no overhead lighting, and still didn’t have any issues with the photography. Plus, I think the weather and warm ambient lighting just added to the overall dramatic effect.

The headboard for our bed was by far the easiest project in this entire room and one of the pieces that I feel really pulls the whole room together. As much as I ADORE our accent wall (and apparently so do all of you!), the wall just looked incomplete without a headboard. I whipped this one up in just a couple hours (headboards are kinda my specialty *flips hair*) using Jennifer’s tutorial over at Making Pretty Spaces. You can find it in her Instagram Highlights under “Besta Built-ins”. We kept it super simple and somewhat low profile so that we wouldn’t cover too much of the accent wall with the headboard, and wouldn’t cover too much of the headboard with the pillows.

The lights were another super simple DIY project that used all IKEA products. I did have to do some basic electrical work in order to get the cord through the bracket as shown, so you won’t be getting a DIY tutorial for those (I’m not a licensed electrician!). But, you can achieve relatively the same look by just wrapping the cord around the bracket.

The slide out laundry cabinet has been SO awesome and has really helped keep our room tidy. No more dirty clothes piling up on the floor! I really love how we were able to use that space to make something that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

On the opposite side of the room, the bookcase wardrobe was another project that turned out beautifully after weeks and weeks of frustration and rethinking. The wood plank top was another last minute addition that I felt really tied the room together and lended itself to the rustic, industrial vibe of the room. The bookcases turned out to be the perfect amount of storage for our accessories and the nesting trays are awesome for keeping our jewelry organized.

So many of the great design ideas for this room (along with the beautiful execution) came from my boyfriend/design assistant/#1 fan, Ira. He was such a tremendous help throughout this entire challenge and I know I couldn’t have gotten most of this room done without him. Fun fact: Ira and I both used to be cheerleaders and went stunting together for our first date. For the first couple months we were together, I’m pretty sure he held my feet more than he held my hand! I love adding cute personal touches to each room I design, so it was only fitting that I put a little rhyme about our love story on the message board in our room.

Finally, I’d like to give HUGE thank you to everyone that’s followed along and cheered me on through this entire process. Y’all’s encouragement and support means the world to me! It was so awesome getting to share my progress with all of you and follow along as hundreds of other designers redid rooms in their homes as well. I’m off to go checkout the room reveals from the other guest participants and featured designers and you should do the same! I’m super excited to see what everyone else has come up with and I’m sure I’ll get some major design inspo for the future. I’ll catch y’all back here soon!
