ORC — Master Bedroom Makeover // Week 4 Update

With the One Room Challenge finish line rapidly approaching, I find myself wondering “will I ever get a full 8 hours of sleep again?” This project has basically been like a 4th job for me and whew. I. Am. Tired. Although the goal of the challenge is to makeover one room in your house over the course of 6 weeks, all of the rooms in my apartment have actually been getting a makeover. For example, the kitchen has a nice stack of dirty dishes that now just live in the sink—a daily reminder that I may be in over my head. There’s an entire mountain of laundry that I’ve yet to fold, so rather than folding it, I just move it from room to room whenever it’s in my way. And then there’s my old mattress propped at the top of the stairs, and my new bed frame at the bottom, patiently waiting for someone to take them to their respective places. I’m telling you, it’s a mess over here. But, a beautiful one. A mess that says progress is being made elsewhere and dammit that laundry can wait!

If you’re completely confused and wondering how we got here, you can catch up on Weeks 1-3 of the ORC below. While you’re at it, be sure to also check out what the other ORC guest designers are up to!

Week 4. We had our ups and down, but we made it through. I was able to cross 5 (and a half) things off of my list this week and if that’s not a major win I don’t know what is.

Major progress was made on my bookcase cabinet, although it still isn’t finished yet. The doors have been assembled, sanded, painted, and lacquered and are all ready to be attached to the bookcase. That in itself took about 2 days to complete (and even longer to air the smell of wood finish out of my house). You may remember from my original renderings and mood board that I planned on staining the cabinet doors a warm wood tone…well yeah, that didn’t happen. Then I ran into major issues with the hinge hardware. Then I just got frustrated and decided to take a break from even thinking about that project, ha! It’s a whole long story that I’ll save for another post.

On a brighter note, I was able to finish building my pullout laundry cabinet and it is awesome! I’m definitely interested to see how it holds up, but as of now, it’s perfect! As you’re now aware, laundry is a major pain point for me. This hidden hamper solution was the perfect trick to keep all that laundry mess out of sight and out of mind. Now if I could just come up with a solution for getting all the clean clothes back into my closet, life would be perfect.

You can also tell from the photos above that I hung frames on the wall next to my bed. I went back and forth on what to do in that space for a while, but in the end I decided on just 2 large photos instead of an entire gallery wall. The striped accent wall looks so good I really didn’t want to take attention away from it by doing another feature wall. Plus, you can’t even see that wall from outside of the room. Ira and I already picked out the images we want to frame, so now I’m waiting to pick them up from Sam’s—hence the 1/2 finished task I mentioned.

Late last night, Ira and I rolled out our new rug and set up our adjustable bases with the Tempur Pedic mattresses. Can I just say, OMG those things are comfortable! They have just the right amount of squish to cradle your body without making you feel like you’re suffocating in foam. The adjustable bases are also a majorrr game-changer, and tbh, I may just end up working from my bed every day. They’re that great. I did notice after making the bed though that you can’t even see the base…lol. Because of that, I’ll probably skip making a bed frame and just DIY a headboard that mounts directly on the wall.

Design-wise, this room is definitely more suited for a queen-sized bed, but one simply does not pass up 75% off a brand new king mattress. You just don’t. We still have plenty of room on the sides and foot of the bed to move around so I’m not at all worried about the new size being an issue. We’re still trying out different pillow and comforter options, causeee I’m actually hating how it looks currently. On the plus side though, the room already looks 10x better now that the mattresses aren’t on the floor.

As of now, here’s what my updated To-Do List is looking like, but who knows what will change in the next two weeks. Anything is possible.
