House Update, June 2020 Progress | Kayla Simone Home

house update

Our windows are like 99% done and looking good! One window still has a crack in the glass, but that will get replaced soon. Luckily with all of the windows actually in place now, they’ll be able to move forward and start on our stone exterior and interior insulation. They also finished our driveway this week, woohoo! I’m still a little bummed I didn’t catch it while it was wet, because I really wanted to put our initials in it, but no biggie.

We were among the first families to buy a house in this new neighborhood, so it was just open plots of land and street signs when we signed our contract. Seeing all of the houses go up over the past couple of months has been CRAZY. What used to be all open fields now has almost 30 (in-progress) houses on it. It’s starting to look like a real community!

First project for the new house, done!

My barstool project is finally complete! I don’t think it’s ever taken me this long to do such a simple project, but life, yaknow? The matte black base looks 2389465x better than the chrome and I can’t wait to see how they’ll look in the new kitchen! I gave a sneak peek of the new stools on my Instagram story yesterday…and you should definitely be following me on Instagram. If you missed it, there will be a tutorial post up this week with all of the before and after pics!

“how can I make my home flow, without every room looking the same?”

I get this question from friends, family, everybody, all the time. I’m all about making a home that looks cohesive, but unique. I like to think about it kind of like a bed and breakfast vs a hotel. At a b&b, the rooms usually share the same general theme, but each one has a unique style or design. In hotels, the rooms are very cookie cutter. The bedrooms are the same, the bathrooms look the same, same same same. Sarah over at Room For Tuesday wrote a great post on how to create a cohesive home where each room looks like they belong under the same roof, without making every room look the same.

my first week as a new home designer…

Woot woot! My first week was even more exciting and fun than I thought it would be! I’ve already sat in on about 6 or 7 design appointments and completed my first spec home—meaning I got to choose all of the design elements that went into an inventory home before it sells. It’s basically like Sims in real life…and y’all know Sims is my jam!

I will say, the weirdest thing about being a New Home Designer is that not everyone wants your opinion or expertise. As an Interior Designer, clients literally hire you because they want your help and your input. As a New Home Designer though, I’m already having to get to used to the fact that not everyone wants my help. Not everyone cares about upgrading things or comes in with a super detailed Pinterest board like I had, haha! People make some…interesting design choices when left to their own devices, which has proven to be a little tough to get used to. But hey, as long as they’re happy with their home when all is said and done, I’m happy!
