Our Home Goals for 2021

Happy New Year y’all! WHEW. We made it a whole freaking week past 2020. At times it felt like we’d never make it out of 2020. At times it feels like we still haven’t… But here we are 🙃It feels sooo good to be back on the blog and gearing up for a new year of project shenanigans and half-baked DIYs. I love learning and growing and pushing myself to create and I’m so glad that so many of you enjoy being along for the ride! If you haven’t already, be sure to follow me on Instagram to keep up with my projects as they happen in real-time.

We have so many projects planned for this house. Like seriously, SO many! It’s been really hard narrowing the list down to just a few things that we think we’ll be able to accomplish this year. I’ve honestly never really been one to stick to a task list exactly as written—I like to leave myself open to be able to pivot as needed…and y’all know ya girl is good for mid-project pivot! But regardless, I like to at least start off with a list, even if it’s the only purpose is for the satisfaction that comes with being able to check things off of it. So here it goes,

our (tentative) 2021 project list

the garage

I spend a good chunk of my free time in the garage because of all the DIYs, so tackling this space first will make it that much easier to do the rest of my projects. Currently, our only organization is in the form of mix-matched plastic bins and 3x3 wooden cubbies that store all of our power tools, painting supplies, etc. Not exactly ideal, as you can imagine.

  • Epoxy the floor

  • Create a permanent workspace

  • Storage solution for all of our shizz

the living room

This room is actually almost done. I mean, no room is ever really “done,” but we don’t have a ton of projects planned for this space. The ones we do have though? Those are gone be GOOOOD.

  • Finishing the built-ins

  • Ceiling beams — I know a lot of y’all are really excited about this one! I can’t wait! It’s going to add so much charm and character to the space. I’ve really been trying to be cognizant of making the house feel cozy and not too contemporary.

  • DIY coffee table

  • Accent wall along the back wall, by the patio door

  • Some good ole’ decorating. All of the areas will need to be styled, plus I’m still waiting on the rug I ordered to come in. Damn you, COVID shipment delays.

  • Bonus: maybe buying another piece of the sectional?!

the kitchen

We’re so close to finished with this space! There isn’t a lot left that needs to be done out in the open—now it’s all about the organization.

  • Adding cabinets above the fridge

  • Organizing the fridge and cabinets

  • Pantry makeover

  • Tile the backsplash to the ceiling, above the vent hood and cabinets

  • Adding an accent to the underside of the island

Ira’s office

This project should be…interesting. To say the least. Ira has almost complete design control over his office and he will probably be the one coming up with most of the design plans. I’ll be the task rabbit getting all the projects done. He has great taste though, so with just a little bit of helpful guidance from me, I think this space could end up being really cool. It’s going to be a full room makeover, complete with building in the archway that separates this room from our bedroom and adding a hidden door. Here are just a few of the things we’ll have to do:

  • DIY desk

  • DIY ottoman

  • Paint the room

  • Add window treatments, rug, new desk chair, and decor

  • Hang the guitars

  • Come up with a storage/organization solution

our bedroom

Since we’re already building in the wall between Ira’s office and our bedroom, it only seems right that we make our room into more of a sanctuary and less of a dorm room meets halfway house. We’ve lived with this bare-bones design (if you can even call it that) since we moved in—caps over the wiring for future sconces, a rug that isn’t my style anymore, messy nightstands, naked duvet…ugh. Need I explain more? I don’t have any full design plans for this space quite yet, but I’m thinking:

  • Dark accent wall

  • New bedding

  • DIY nightstands

  • Roman shades

  • Artwork & decor

  • Better clothing storage

  • Install sconces

the guest room

This room has been our (read: my) dumping ground for extra decor, out-of-season-throw pillows, bins upon bins of Christmas ornaments, and other random items since we moved in. I cleaned it out in preparation for my family to come for the holidays, which was great…but in cleaning it, I mainly just shoved and stacked everything in the closet. At some point, hopefully, sometime soon, I’ll have to undo all of that to create my cute, little closet office space. A “cloffice”, if you will. By putting the office in the closet instead of in the main area of the room, I’ll be able to just close it off when guests come to stay. I also work best with dual monitors, so keeping all of my office in the closet makes it a better permanent solution than having it out in the open.

the guest bathroom

I’ve already added a small accent wall in this room, so this will be a continuation of that phase 1 renovation. Since the bathroom doesn’t get used much, I don’t want to dedicate a ton of time or money towards it. We’ll start by just swapping out a few things now for aesthetics, and then do a bigger reno later, probably ripping out all of the tile and replacing it.

  • Stenciled tile floors

  • Replace mirrors

  • New vanity light fixture

  • DIY shower curtains

  • New plumbing fixtures

  • Linen closet makeover

Filler projects:

We also have a few other random things we want to get done sooner rather than later that will probably serve as “filler” projects between bigger DIYs.

  • Finishing the baseboards (yeah…still gotta do that)

  • Replacing all of the doorknobs with levers. We opted not to do this during the build process because it would be cheaper to do it ourselves. You can read more about that here.

  • Install cabinet hardware in our bathroom so I can stop almost breaking a nail every time I need to open a drawer.

  • Accent wall in the gym. This is more Ira’s domain, so as soon as he decides on a design, then we’ll do this project together.

  • Anddd whatever else my design heart desires ♡

Hope you enjoyed getting a look at some of the not-so-cute spaces in our house that I usually hide from view on the Gram. I can’t wait to look back at this post at the end of the year and compare these “befores” to some pretty cool “afters.” Best case scenario, it’ll make for a really awesome “Damn. We really did that” moment. Worst case scenario, maybe this list will teach me not to make such ambitious lists! But now, be honest… Are we (and by we, I mean me) crazy for adding so many things to our to-do list? Eh, maybe. But ya know what, I love a good challenge. And with the way things are looking, we may be spending the majority of the year at home again, which gives us plenty of time to get things done. 2021, lessss get it!
